Safe Systems of Work

Information-based safe systems guidance. This is not a separate risk assessment; it supports the two live RAs.

Safe systems of work summary

Laser cutting

  • Authorised operators only.
  • Guards and interlocks must not be bypassed.
  • LEV must be running and effective before cutting.
  • Keep combustibles away from cutting areas.
  • Report faults before continuing work.

Gas systems

  • Restricted access to liquid oxygen compound.
  • No ignition sources, hot work or smoking near oxygen storage.
  • Nitrogen systems maintained by competent persons.
  • Report leaks, alarms or damaged hoses immediately.

Electric FLT

  • Trained and authorised operators only.
  • Complete pre-use checks and wear seatbelt.
  • Keep pedestrians clear during movement and lifting.
  • Travel slowly with stable loads carried low.

Sheet metal

  • Use mechanical handling for heavy or awkward sheets.
  • Wear suitable gloves for sharp metal edges.
  • Do not climb racking or pull unstable stock.
  • Keep aisles and exits clear.

Fire safety

  • Keep escape routes and fire points clear.
  • Manage combustible pallets, packaging and offcuts.
  • Know alarm, evacuation and assembly point arrangements.
  • Report electrical faults, hot spots or burning smells.

First aid

  • Know who the first aiders/appointed persons are.
  • Report all injuries and near misses.
  • Call 999 for serious injury, crushing, heavy bleeding or burns.
  • Keep kits, eyewash and trauma provision visible and stocked.

Safe isolation / LOTO

  • Identify all energy sources before maintenance, cleaning or fault work.
  • Shut down, isolate, lock/tag and verify isolation before work starts.
  • Never rely on an emergency stop as the only isolation control.
  • Only competent authorised persons to isolate equipment.

Hot work permits

  • Permit required for welding, grinding, cutting, blowtorches or spark/heat work.
  • Clear combustibles and provide suitable extinguishers.
  • Maintain fire watch during and after works.
  • Retain permit and RAMS evidence.

PPE and workwear

  • Operational standard: trousers, polo/fleece workwear, steel toe cap boots and task-specific gloves.
  • Additional eye, hearing or respiratory protection where task assessment requires it.
  • PPE is the last line of defence and does not replace safe systems.

Vehicles and yard control

  • Fleet includes two flatbed trucks with 1.5t payloads and one pickup truck.
  • Authorised drivers only; manage reversing and loading/unloading.
  • Keep emergency access and evacuation routes clear.
  • Control interaction between vehicles, FLT and pedestrians.
